Should I Call Them Back?

Kinja'd!!!

This is going to be an off topic job-related post after the jump. Have a blue Corvette z06 for your troubles.

So about a month or two ago, I got a few job offers right after I graduated and I foolishly declined them in order to wait for [redacted company]. Fast forward to last month before I left for vacation, I got a call from [redacted company] that I was put on hold and they were going to interview other people and it would take 2-5 weeks before they would get back to me. I am pretty sure that is code for “nope, we’re going with the next batch of people we interview.”

Well now I am back to job hunting and it feels/looks like all the entry-level jobs for freshly graduated students have completely dried up. I feel like I’m going crazy sitting around at home and waking up to apply for a handful of positions I VERY loosely qualify for every morning and then spending the rest of the day just looking around the internet at dSLRs, watches and cars that I want to purchase but can’t. There is only so much Game of Thrones I can watch before I feel like I am going crazy just sitting at home.

So my question is, would it be such a bad idea if I were to call back one of the companies that offered me a position and seeing (read: begging) if they would consider reopening the offer they gave me last month?

If they say no you have lost nothing.

I finished my first year of college this past year and waited too long to look for an internship. Got an interview with one company that seemed promising (the interview went well), but the very next morning I got an email that said they weren’t going to fill the position. So I started looking online and driving around and dropping off resumes at different places. Nothing came of any of it, even though I had connections with a few of the companies at which I applied through family members or my former boss. I even applied at Chick-Fil-A. It turned out that a family friend needed help at his company over the summer, so that’s what I ended up doing. I never had any company call me back; the only contact I had with them was when I called them first. Even Chick-Fil-A never called me back. Point is, the job market is kinda sucky right now and you have nothing to lose by calling those people back. The worst they can say is no, and you can move on. But hopefully something good will come out of it. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks man. I’ve been contemplating between calling or not these past few days but ended up chickening out every time. I’ll definitely give them a call tomorrow and report back with how it went. I’m not getting my hopes up but I figure I might as well do something rather than waiting.

That sucks man. The job market definitely sucks for those of us with little to no experience. Guess we’ve just gotta make the best of a shitty situation. If only we lived in a country that actually put a higher emphasis on apprenticeships and actually training those who are willing to learn and work.

yes. As I look back on life, my greatest regrets are when I did NOT act. If you end up with no job or a lesser job down the road without asking about this job, you will always think back what if.

If you act and get a no, then at least you know you have done what you could do.

It’s hard for people to get over their fear of rejection, but those that do prosper in life and love.

That’s pretty good life advice to live by. I’ve noticed that as I’m getting older I am more willing to just act instead of worrying about the negative result. I’d rather go kicking and screaming than just letting things happen.
